304-page Mook DUF – the anti-bore remedy for dull days

DUF is a new, 304-page book-magazine for 12-to 17-year-olds, which is different from other teenage magazine/books with its original points of view, varied design and mix of stories and articles. ‘In DUF you’ll find what you’re not looking for and you’ll look for what you can’t find anywhere else,’ says publisher Suzanne Hertogs, ‘it’s an anti-bore remedy for dull days.’ The first reactions of the national press to this independent publication, free of advertisements, are full of praise.

The public embraced DUF; 4,000 copies of this self-published book were sold within the first three months of publication (the only publicity campaign was a single press release).

First page: serendipity: the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. You are DUF (dull) if: you know how to record onto a cassette tape; your first music album was an LP; you remember NOT having a cell phone; you've never seen a playstation... then DUF isn't for you! DUF, the brainchild of Suzanne Hertogs (designer, art director), is an independently published mook created to entice Dutch teenagers to read more. DUF has a high 'ZAP-factor', with a wide variety of information presented in a playful and exciting manner for youngsters. DUF is an adventure; just like reading should be. Topics covered range from a 7-page article on a Jeroen Bosch painting to a 'fuck without worries' item. The various writing styles used include the short story, prose, poetry and reportages.

DUF is fun! Even when you can remember not having a cell phone.
